Many congratulations to Daniel Cowley who won this year's Club Championship last Sunday from a most worthy opponent in Kumar Starkie-Gupta.
The thirty six hole final was still in the balance until the very last putt when Danny equalled Kumar's birdie four to win by one hole.
The first round had seen Danny take a four hole lead after Kumar's putter failed at vital moments.
The second round started in dramatic fashion with Danny hitting his first tee shot some 110 yards along the ground before clearing the practice area with a recovery to the fringe and a chip and putt secured a par. Kumar took the more conventional route to a point on the right edge of the green only to three putt once more. Five down would have defeated most of us but Kumar stuck to the task and a combination of superb chips and much better putting meant he closed the gap to two with the 17th and 18th still to play.
A swirling breeze, not to mention mounting tension, affected them both on the par three with Kumar through the back and Danny short. Another brilliant chip saw Kumar hole side and Danny just lip out for a four. They both set off down the last with huge drives holding the fairway.
I witnessed many super shots that afternoon from both players but I picked Danny's iron from over two hundred yards to the heart of the eighteenth as my 'shot of the day' considering all the circumstances.
The intriguing battle was testament to Danny's practice regime over the past weeks and to Kumar's incredible recovery from serious injury. His natural talent will ensure his name will be on the winners list before too long.
It is heartening to see so many high class players contest the finals and to have such strength in depth at Stanmore GC, well done to all concerned.
Moments of their play did remind me of my golf, that 110 shot along the ground and the occasional three putt anyway! Sorry James.
