Stanmore Golf Club raises £2,000 for St Luke’s Hospice
The ever-popular ‘Greenkeeper’s Revenge’ Charity Golf Day saw 120 members and staff take to the
fairways at Stanmore Golf Club, culminating in £2,000 being raised for St Luke’s Hospice in Kenton.
St Luke’s Director of Fundraising said "Special thanks are due to each
and every player for digging deep on the day to benefit such a worthy cause. We are an independent charity and like most charities
at the moment, we are feeling the results of the credit squeeze. This donation from Stanmore’s members is a welcome
boost to help us meet our funding requirements.
“We
are proud to be able to offer all our services to patients and their families free of charge. However, as a charity we receive
approximately 30% of our funding from the NHS, and the remaining 70% has to come through continuous fundraising to ensure
that we can continue to achieve our aim.”
The Greenkeeper’s
Revenge Golf Day is an opportunity for Stanmore’s head greenkeeper to inflict retribution for any criticism that has
been levelled at him throughout the year by members who complain that the course quality is not up to par. Industrial fairway
mowers guard the greens, pin positions are chosen to ensure nigh impossible putts, flags are randomly removed from greens,
and golfers are dowsed by the course sprinklers when they least expect it.
Stanmore Golf Club’s Captain, Roger
Montague added, “The golf was followed by a charity auction which included golfing memorabilia signed by Padraig Harrington,
Darren Clarke and Anthony Kim. And thanks are also due to the many local shops and businesses who kindly donated a wide selection
of raffle prizes. St Luke’s Hospice look after around 500 new patients each year, and credit is due to all those who
continuously help to raise awareness for such a worthy cause.”
