News From Stanmore Golf Club - 10th February 2012

Course Update

Overnight another inch of snow has fallen on top of the two or three inches that were still on the course from before. The pictures on the website taken today look very pretty, but unfortunately tell you everything you need to know about the chances of the course re-opening any time soon! See the Course Information page on the website for some snowy pictures: http://www.stanmoregolfclub.co.uk/id20.html

The course will definitely be closed Saturday. We will have a member of staff in on Sunday in case there is a miracle thaw, but it is looking unlikely.

Forthcoming Events:

Elvis is Back!

Back by popular demand, the Stanmore Foxes present a Dinner and Cabaret, on Saturday 10th March. Dinner will be at 7.30pm and the sensational Adam Carter will be performing as Elvis. All are welcome, tickets are £27.50 in advance to Stuart Briers. Dress code smart casual, no jeans or trainers. Two years ago this was the most popular and best supported of the functions organised by Stuart Briers and the Foxes Section. Get your names on the list on the main notice board in the corridor ASAP to avoid disappointment. No Golf, No Raffles, Just Loads of Fun! The menu for the evening will be:

Starters: Carrot & Coriander Soup

or

Melon & Grapefruit Cocktail

Mains: Carvery: Beef - Lamb - Gammon

or Vegetarian alternative

Dessert: Buffet Selection

Cheese & Biscuits

Coffee & Mints

Mixed Bridge Day

On Thursday 15th March we will be hosting a Mixed Bridge Day organised by the Ladies Section. Start time will be 10 for 10.30am, and the cost £42 per table. Coffee on arrival and lunch will be provided. To reserve a table or for any further info, please contact Lady Captain Moira Hamill: mh@moirahamill.plus.com

St Patrick's Day Texas Scramble

As mentioned last week, the St. Patrick's Day Texas Scramble will now be on Saturday 17th March. This is Patrick's Day itself. As usual there will be an 8.30am shot-gun start, followed by traditional Irish Fare. Later in the afternoon England take on Ireland in the 6-Nations Championship, so I'm sure a lot of members will stay for that and make a full day of it!

Winter Knockout Competitions

The snow over the last week may have prevented some of you from playing matches in the winter knockout competitions. We will re-assess if any of the deadline dates need to be extended once we know when the course is going to open again.

Reminder - Match Results: It is good etiquette for the losers of a match to write up the names of the winners on the board, to put their names forward into the next round of the competition. However it is the responsibility of all players involved to ensure that this is done. There have been several instances in recent years where this has not been the case, and both players or both pairs in doubles have ended up being disqualified from the competition. It is therefore important to make sure that you not only play the match by the deadline date, but write the result up on the board as well.

Members' Occupations

Wherever possible we like to support our members, for example if we need a plumber or electrician, we will always see if we can contact a member of the club first rather than give the business to an outsider. With this in mind we are trying to build up a directory of members' occupations. Last time I mentioned this I think I only had two responses! It would be very useful to know what company you work for, or if you have your own business, and what type of service you might be able to provide to the club. Just send me an email with the information. Many thanks.

This Weekend

This evening we have the Tigers AGM and Dinner, and on Saturday the Past Captains' Meeting will be held. This is where the past Captains of the club meet to agree the Captain-Elect and Vice-Captain Elect for the year ahead. Other than this it looks like being a very quiet weekend, with the likelihood of any golf taking place very remote unfortunately!
