STANMORE

FOXES 2008

Captain – Dave Bell

The Foxes section is for both five and seven days members with a playing handicap from 9 to 19 and is affiliated to the Middlesex County Foxes Association. The Foxes is the largest section at Stanmore with over 200 golfers that fall into this category by way of handicap. There are no other qualifications required to join this section and therefore you are entitled to play in all events subject to a £5.00 subscription and entering your name on the appropriate sheet in the men's locker room.

Inter club matches are restricted by number and therefore it is advisable to enter as early as possible.

The Foxes playing season is from April to September and includes the following matches and competitions : -

We have eighteen home and away matches against nine other clubs, there are ten players per team and the format is four ball better ball. These matches are played on a friendly but competitive basis, they are midweek and start between 2.30/3.30pm followed by dinner at about 7.30pm. The cost is only £15.00 for your meal.

There are similar matches played against the other sections of the club - High Handicap, Tigers, Ladies, Juniors and the Past Foxes Captains.

We then have the more competitive matches : -

Foxes Players Trophy & AGM - This is an 18 hole single stableford competition being played on the 13th March in the afternoon followed by dinner and the Foxes AGM - this event is the start of our playing year.

Jubilee Cup - Foxes vs Tigers vs High Handicap being played on Thursday 5th June at 3pm followed by dinner in the evening.  This is a nine man team from each section based on a single stableford format with the aggregate team score winning the match. The team for this match is generally selected from those who play in the regular friendly matches played against other clubs.

Foxes Shield - This is an 18 hole bogey compeitition played on Sunday 15th June.

Foxes Knock Out - Individual knock out competition between Foxes members that runs throughout the summer.

Foxes Captains Day - This is our day out being played this year at South Herts Golf Club on Friday 30th May. This is an all day event that includes lunch and/or dinner. There are 18 and  27 hole options available to suit all players. The event is open to all Foxes & guests – see Foxes notice board

Foxes Cup - This is a single Stableford competition played with five golf clubs only, being played on Saturday 9th August.

Abrey Cup - Nine man team, knock out competition played against eight other Middlesex clubs. Each round is played at a neutral course, followed by dinner in the same way as the friendly matches.

Middlesex County Foxes Championship - Six man team, single stableford, 36 hole competition played against eight other Middlesex Clubs.  This event is being  hosted by Grims Dyke Golf Club this year on Wednesday 20th August. This is the only qualifying competition and is generally for those who play the regular friendly matches- see Foxes notice board.

Foxes Open Event, Dinner & Disco -  This is an 18 hole single stableford competition being held on Saturday 21st June. This event is open to all club members and guests and is followed by dinner and a disco in the evening with wives/partners.

The Foxes section has a very active and full playing season and is open to all club members between 9 and 19 handicap and their guests in certain events. Our aim is to encourage more of our existing members and in particular our new members to take part in as many events as possible.

HIGH HANDICAP (RABBITS) SECTION

The Rabbits Section is for both five and seven day members with a playing handicap of 19 to 28 inclusive.

The Rabbits Section has around 200 eligible members who qualify by virtue of their handicap; there are no other qualifications necessary to be a member of the section.  Being a member of the section entitles you to play in any event for which you qualify resulting from your handicap, all you have to do is put your name on the appropriate sheet that can be found on the section notice board in the men’s locker room.

The Rabbits Section is the only section that plays throughout the year.  In the summer months, we play against fourteen local clubs and in the winter months five on a home and away basis.  That makes a total of twenty-eight summer and ten winter matches.  Generally we field teams of ten but against some clubs we play twelve per side.  Matches are four-ball better ball and are friendly but competitive; matches are on weekdays with summer matches starting at around 14:00hrs and winters matches at around 09:30hrs.  All players are expected to dine after, for summer matches and generally before for winter matches depending on arrangements.  The cost of matches varies being the cost for your meal; £16.00 foe summer matches and about £8.00 for winter matches.

The Rabbits Section also plays matches against the Ladies, Foxes and Juniors with the same format as matches against other clubs.  In addition to the internal club matches there is an annual competition between Tigers, Foxes and Rabbits with teams of ten playing in groups of three in a single Stableford format with the aggregate team score winning the competition.

The Rabbits Section plays in the Stanley West knockout competition in which teams of nine compete in match play.  Early rounds are played at home or away with the semi-finals and final played at neutral courses.  Matches are followed by a dinner as for friendly matches.  This year we have reached the final and play Sudbury at Sandy Lodge Gold Club on 6th October.

The section AGM and dinner takes place in March and is preceded by the John Dawson Cup which is played in memory of a former Rabbits’ captain for a trophy donated by John’s family.

Our Captain’s Day in early may takes the form of a single Stableford competition for the Captain’s prize; dinner follows in the normal way.

There are five other competitions run by the Rabbits’ section with differing formats:

  • Super Rabbit – a knock-out competition with the winner going on to represent the section at the annual HH Captains and Secretaries day tournament.
  • Dennis Yerby Cup – a Stableford competition; played in early October.
  • Bill Smith Shield – a better ball pairs’ competition with a draw for pairs being made from the list of entrants; played in mid-October.
  • Watson Strother Cup – a medal competition; played in early November
  • Len Hughes Cup – a Stableford competition but played with only five clubs; played in mid-November.

In addition to the above there is the High Handicap Cup which is a knock-out competition but run by the club.

One of the highlights of the year is the HH Invitation Day, in early September, when we invite clubs we play in friendly matches to send representatives.  Teams of four are drawn with each team will have at least one Stanmore member with the other members of each four-ball being drawn at random from the list submitted by the various clubs.  There are various prizes to be played for on the day and these are presented at the post-match dinner.

Lastly, the Rabbits’ Section holds a Ladies Night in November which is our way of saying thank you to our wives or partners for their patience and forbearance throughout the year.
